Dr Newcome set up a charity in the village in the 18th Century to make sure that there would always be a school to educate the children of the village, at a time when education was otherwise only for those who could afford it.
Over the last few years we have been trying to bring this local charity up to date (such as by having a board of trustees, rather than a sole trustee), and to make it more relevant for Offord now, so that it can help local children and young people who may be in need of financial help for their education, as well as the groups and organisations in the village that are involved in education.
A new ‘scheme’ for the charity was drawn up in 2010-2011, to define what the charity is for and who can benefit from it. The main Object of the charity is defined as:
“to promote, for the public benefit, the education of persons under the age of 25 who are in need of financial assistance and are resident in the area of benefit.”
- The ‘area of benefit’ is Offord Cluny and Offord Darcy.
- Grants may be awarded to individuals or to groups / organisations.
- The Charity Registration number for the charity is 311806
- The charity is currently governed by four trustees: Revd Ally Barrett, Mr John Storey, Mrs Valerie Seekings, and Mr Stephen Eayrs.
Applications for funding (or to see a full copy of the charity scheme) may be made to Revd Ally Barrett, The Vicarage, Buckden, St Neots, Cambs, PE19 5TL.
